Categorization of "Star Wars" Artworks
From the point of view of narrative authority, "Star Wars" artistic works are divided into two categories: "Canon" and "Legends.
Canon refers to works that have been planned or approved by the Lucasfilm Story Group to ensure consistency and coherence in storytelling. New canon works must be consistent with the existing canon in terms of plot and setting, avoiding contradictions and conflicts to create a cohesive whole.
Legends, on the other hand, primarily encompasses the body of work known as the "Expanded Universe" prior to May 2014. These works were previously considered part of the canon. However, with Lucasfilm's policy adjustment regarding Star Wars canon in late April 2014, these works are no longer recognized as canon and have been given a new label, namely Legends. Although Legends works are also authorized by Lucasfilm and strive for a high degree of internal consistency, the Lucasfilm Story Group is no longer responsible for their plots and settings. Consequently, new canon works are not required to adhere to the plotlines and settings established in Legends. However, this does not mean that Legends is no longer part of the Star Wars universe; canon and Legends can be considered parallel universes within the franchise.
It is worth noting that both canon and Legends include an animated series called "The Clone Wars". In English, the Legends version is called "Clone Wars", while the canon version is called "The Clone Wars" - the only difference being the definite article. In Chinese, if we were to describe the Legends version of "The Clone Wars", we would call it an "animated miniseries", while the canon version would be called an "animated series".
